We often have to attach two or more metal fragments without welding, bolting or brazing them. The only way to achieve such bonding jobs is with a high quality industrial adhesive. At present, the market is filled with a wide range of these bonding agents.
For metal-to-metal bonding, you will get bonding agents that fall mainly into three categories. They are cyanoacrylate, polyurethane and epoxy. Although these industrial products are primarily formulated for use in industries, their use is quite common in homes as well. All of these products are known to provide extremely strong bonds when used as directed. However, it has been found that the majority of homeowners prefer to use epoxy adhesive. So, in this article, we will discuss how to use epoxy to create the perfect metal-to-metal bond.
We will have to start by preparing the surfaces that we are going to fix. This step is extremely essential if you want to achieve the strongest metal-to-metal bond possible. First, thoroughly clean the surfaces to be attached. Here, cleaning means removing all traces of corrosion, rust or paint from metal parts. The job may become easier for you if you use a sanding or scraping tool. To get rid of oil, grease, wax, dirt and dust on surfaces, using a paper towel or rag should suffice.
Next, use a piece of fine-grit sandpaper to make the metal surfaces tougher. Also pre-fit any metal parts you plan to assemble. This is important to ensure that there are no large gaps between these parts.
The next step is to apply the adhesive. Ideally, you should perform this step following the instructions provided by the manufacturer. The majority of bonding agents used to bond metal surfaces together should be used outdoors or in well-ventilated areas. This will avoid inhaling glue fumes when assembling the metal parts.
Finally, it's time to attach the metal parts. Epoxy adhesive is known for creating the strongest chin-to-metal bonds possible. The majority of epoxy products will require you to mix equal parts curing agent and adhesive before application. Apply the mixed solution to one of the surfaces you want to join. Place the other surface on the glued surface and clamp them together. Wait at least 60 minutes for the bond to form. If you have the time, we suggest waiting a minimum of 24 hours before using the bonded metal body.
